Meet Jewel, my first cat. I first saw Jewel in 1997 in a South Carolina flea market. She was the smallest kitten I had ever seen. She was crying, meowing and crawling with (ironically) fleas. The vendor that had her must have seen me coming a mile away. I was an 11-year-old sucker for kittens. Here was this black-and-white little blip of a creature with gorgeous green eyes looking up at me helplessly. How could I resist? Plus, that day I had several factors going for me. 1. I wasn’t with my parents that day but my mother’s friend. 2. My older sister had recently mentioned that she and her boyfriend were considering getting a cat. 3. The kitten was free to a good (any) home. With one, two and three, I had a kitten in a cardboard box on the car ride home.... 1 comment

Ballpark biscuits

This past weekend I made a trip back to my hometown of St. Louis. We were able to attend the Cardinals baseball game on Sunday, and since I’m a diehard Redbirds fan, I was in heaven. Even though just seeing the Cards play was sweet enough, there was an added perk to Sunday’s game. An event called Purina Pooches in the Park was being held that day which meant a hundred dogs hanging around the baseball stadium. These dogs weren’t just sniffing around the bleachers on leashes either. They were decked out in Cardinals jerseys, baseball hats, sunglasses, necklaces and pompoms. One dog was even dyed red! To top it off, the dogs and owners were treated to a special seating area behind centerfield complete with water bowls for the pups. We had the opportunity to sit in the...

Sniffing it out

I think my love affair with animals began when I was 3 years old. I had just gotten out of the hospital after shattering my left leg and was visiting my aunt and grandmother. She had a stray dog that had puppies and my aunt was adamant about giving the “runts” up to the local humane society. Being 3 years old and thinking all animals were adorable, I protested (as much as a little child could). While the adults talked whatever grownups talked about at that time, I sat on the couch in my half-body cast glory. Out of nowhere, a tiny bolt of black and tan fur ran across the room and jumped into my lap. That bolt turned out to be the smallest puppy that was adamant on licking every inch of my face. I turned to my mom and dad with my big brown kid eyes and gave them that pleading... 1 comment
