Gotta Love Ron Paul

7/18/09 1:40 PM

A Yahoo Finance article came out today that features a video of Ron Paul being interviewed about the new version of a health care bill approved by the Senate Health committee on Wednesday. He says this “medical program” is going to cost us a lot more than we think it will because things like this always do. In fact, current cost estimates are probably off by 100 or 200 percent, according to Paul. And I believe him. One, because it just makes sense. Two, this man was once a medical doctor. Three, he pretty much predicted our current economic situation back in 2003 and no one listened. What’s scary is the price tag for this program is already $1 trillion. Towards the end of the interview Paul walked a very fine line claiming that health care, homes and cars are not...

Pelosi Right About MJ Resolution

7/10/09 9:59 AM

I never thought I would see the day when I’d actually agree with Nancy Pelosi, but here I am supporting her decision to “shut the door” on a resolution honoring Michael Jackson. American citizens are just as divided as their representatives on whether or not Jackson is someone who deserves to be treated as such an honorable figure. Most would agree that he is a legend within the entertainment industry and his musical contributions are unprecedented, but allegations concerning his personal life have created enough controversy to let our representatives know that official government recognition is political suicide. The House has a lot on their plate right now. Health care, North Korea, climate change, Iraq and a recession, just to name a few. Michael Jackson’s...

Palin = old news

7/3/09 8:52 PM

The Web is buzzing about a nearly 10,000-word article written by Todd S. Purdum, the national editor at Vanity Fair, on Sarah Palin. In the article Purdum uses quotes and information from mostly unnamed top McCain campaign officials who weren’t exactly fans of Palin. Not once did he write about the perspective of an official who had anything nice to say about Palin and, overall, the article just rehashed the same old comments and events that made Palin seem unqualified. He merely added some unnecessary detail. I’m not criticizing the article because I like Sarah Palin. I’ve actually grown to resent her in a lot of ways. I just don’t understand why the media feels the need to continue to bash and belittle her nearly a year after the election. Do they honestly think...

You Cannot Separate the Personal and the Political

6/25/09 3:38 PM

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s admitted affair has put the future of his political career in question and is certainly not something that should be overlooked. I was pretty alarmed when I recently read that while 54 percent of Americans said it would bother them at least moderately if a presidential candidate has had an extramarital affair, another 46 percent said it would bother them either "not much" or "not at all,” according to a Gallup Poll from November 2007. At the same time, 92 percent of Americans believe having an affair is morally wrong. Why do so many think that politicians’ personal and political lives are so separate? We constantly comment and make jokes about how corrupt politicians are, and then we turn around and say that the...

Private Insurance Will Fall at the Hands of a Public Plan

6/11/09 3:56 PM

I just watched President Obama make a speech about his new Health Insurance Exchange program that will help the 47 million uninsured Americans get the health insurance they need. “…if you like the plan you have, you can keep it,” he said at the town hall meeting in Green Bay, Wisconsin today. If you want a new plan or don’t have insurance you can get a new public plan, offered by the government, which will allow you to pay premiums based on your income. At the sound of this amazing solution, the crowd erupted in applause. I for one will remain a skeptic until this scenario actually plays out. Health care analysts and doctors all over the country warn that this program will force private insurers to raise their rates as they will not be benefiting from the...
