Major promotes marketable skills

With job skills and experience becoming even more important in deciding who gets a job and who doesn’t, choosing an interdisciplinary major could help give graduates the extra push they need to show that they have a strong knowledge in diverse areas of study.

The interdisciplinary studies major was thought to be associated with only small liberal arts colleges. Now, the increased popularity has allowed many public and private colleges to allow students the major as an option.

By majoring in interdisciplinary studies students get the chance to shape their program to what will be more beneficial to them instead of just following a basic study plan that has been set for the majority of available majors.

Having an academic program that touches on multiple areas can show employers that the degree holder has interacted with subjects that can make them a stronger employee for their position.

According to UCF’s Interdisciplinary Studies Web site, “Interdisciplinary Studies students have the chance to study across disciplines and access skills and a background that makes them strong candidates in the job market.”

Because available jobs aren’t as plentiful as they were even a few years ago, each diverse skill learned in college can be a useful asset.

UCF’s interdisciplinary studies program ranked as a top ten choice among students for the 2008-2009 school year should only help encourage others to explore this field as an option, but it shouldn’t become the final choice for students who are completely undecided or those looking for an easy major to get by in until graduation.

The degree still requires 120 credit hours to graduate just like all of the other degree programs at the university.  It also requires the completion of cornerstone and capstone classes to show that those who are in the program understand the subject and its purpose.

Because the interdisciplinary option allows students to explore multiple subject areas, it may be a strong option for the person who wants to show that they are well-rounded enough to stand out from the competition.
