The devastating BP oil spill is already losing the attention of many Americans.

It is understandable that people will move on with their lives and sometimes with whatever the new crisis is that is captivating the media.

It doesn't hurt to highlight a great event, though, that will help the victims of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Especially when the event is being organized by your fellow students and hosted on your campus.

The "Give for the Gulf" benefit concert is an event that music lovers of all kind should find intriguing enough to attend.

Reggae, country and jazz bands are just some of the types of music that will be playing on August 28 from noon to 7 p.m. on Memory Mall, which is the giant area of grass across from the UCF Arena.

We are impressed with the members of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, Eta Rho chapter for taking time to organize and host this event. Putting on a large event the first week of classes is stressful: between classes, homework and the act of adjusting to the new schedule.

Hopefully between all of your priorities you can find time to attend the event this weekend. Attending will show your support for the victims of the BP oil spill and your support for your fellow students.

Tickets will be sold Saturday and are $7 for college students with IDs and for guests ages 18 and those who are 55 and over. For all other guests tickets are $15. Guests who arrive before 6 p.m. can park for free in Garage D, which is across from the UCF Arena.

Some of the scheduled performers include Illegal Beats, Shak Nasti, Rocketfish, Maida Vale and country music artists Glenn Cummings and Raiford Starke. Part of the lawn will be used for the live entertainment while the other space will be filled with local businesses and organizations, student organizations and food vendors.

The festival creators promise to donate 100 percent of the proceeds to relief efforts for the oil spill. To do so effectively they have partnered with cleanup and disaster relief organizations including GreaterGood.org, Mote Marine Laboratory, the Surfrider Foundation, the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

If you need more information for the event, including a full list of performers, please visit the event website at www.ucfgivesforthegulf.org.

If you can't attend the event Saturday feel free to visit the website, too. You can donate money on it or find links for other organizations that still need volunteers to help the victims of the oil spill.
